He died on Saipan in the Mariana Islands during February 1944. The Army autopsied him, identified him and then sent the body to the Philippines to be buried as an unknown. The government thought their secret was safe. That is until a writer from New Zealand (Bruce Petty) contacted us with a war crimes report outlining the blunder and we contacted a very determined grand daughter that wanted him brought home. It took three years of effort, research, congressional intervention from the Alabama delegations and news reporters that wanted the true story told but we did it. Lt. Woodie Lackland McVay now rests in Mobile, Alabama, in a grave left by his parents in case his body was ever found.
