Herman W. Mulligan

Herman W. Mulligan     PFC Herman W. Mulligan Jr. joined the Marine Corps from Laurens, South Carolina. During the battle of Okinawa he was attached to the 22nd Marines 6th Marine Division. He went missing on 28 May 1945 after throwing a grenade into a cave that just happened to be a Japanese ammunition dump. The explosion that followed is well remembered by all those in the area. He was initially buried as unknown X-35 in the 6th Marine Division Cemetery on Okinawa and following the war was move to the American Battle Monuments Cemetery in Manila, Philippine Islands. After he was identified he was laid to rest in Arlington National Cemetery in August 2018.

Unfortuantely the New York Times ran a false story about who was responsible for getting him identified. Because of these false claims and outright lies, we have been forced to change our policy on submitting cases to the DPAA. It is a sad state of affairs when you can not trust next of kin.
